Suspension of a company profile is a situation where Google (in most cases due to violations of platform rules, inaccurate information, or suspicious activity) restricts access to your business profile on Google Maps or completely removes it from search results.
Why does Google restrict access even when you haven’t changed anything? The reason could be a simple mistake in the business name or phone number, or a hidden problem with the administrator’s reputation or viruses on the website. In this article, we will examine violations — from the obvious to the most insidious — so that you can not only correct mistakes, but also successfully reinstate your business profile on Google.
Types of GBP suspension
Suspension of a business profile can take two forms:
- The company profile disappears completely from Search and Google Maps.
- The pin of the company remains on the map, but the owner’s account is blocked, and they lose the ability to manage the profile.
In the second case, the company continues to be displayed to users, but access to its management is suspended.
How to find out if a company profile has been suspended
1. Email from Google.
You will receive an automatic notification from Google Business Profile about the suspension of your company’s profile at the email address associated with the profile. The subject line will read: “[Business name] Your company profile has been blocked,” and the body of the email will state the general reason for the suspension (e.g., “It is prohibited to publish content that violates our rules regarding misleading content and behavior”).
2. Google Business Profile Control Panel
Log in to your account on the page https://business.google.com/locations
Next to the company name, you will see the status:
- Suspended: The profile is not displayed on Maps or in Search.
- Disabled: Profile deleted for serious or repeated violations.
You will also see the following message in your profile cabinet: “Your access has been suspended because this profile does not meet the requirements. Change your company information and find out how to restore access.”
Why did Google suspend my business profile?
Possible reasons for blocking a profile on Google can be found in the violation:
1. Guidelines for representing your business on Google
2. Guidelines on prohibited and restricred content
These rules are designed to ensure that users receive reliable and secure information about local businesses. Even an unintentional violation of one of the guidelines is considered by the system as an attempt to mislead, which threatens the reputation of your business in the Google ecosystem. However, the official wording of the rules often hides minor nuances that business owners simply do not notice. Below, we will take a closer look at specific violations and “pitfalls” that most often lead to profile blocking.
Reasons why the listing gets suspended
1. The business name violates the rules
Adding a list of services, a list of goods, or the name of the city or district where the business is located to the name is a violation of the guidelines. The name must correspond to the actual brand. Adding words such as “best,” “cheap,” or a list of services directly to the name is considered spam and will result in rapid suspension.
Before submitting an appeal, remove all keywords, special characters, abbreviations, acronyms, and advertising slogans from the name. Make sure that the name fully corresponds to what is written on the signage, on the website, and in legal documents.
2. Mismatch between the selected category and the actual type of activity
Changing the main category of activity, especially if it is radically different from the original one, can lead to the profile being suspended. Google’s algorithms are quite sensitive to such edits, as they may indicate an attempt at manipulation or a radical change in the format of the business without proper verification and evidence.
3. Using duplicate or shared phone numbers
If different business profiles list the same contact phone number, this signals to Google that duplicates may have been created or that manipulation may be attempted. Each business profile must have a unique phone number to pass the authenticity check and avoid being suspended. Google’s algorithms automatically link profiles that share the same phone number. If one of these profiles comes under suspicion, sanctions may extend to all other profiles associated with that number.
4. Violation of website usage rules and domain issues
This field should contain a link to the company’s official website with its own domain. Using links to social networks instead of a website is a violation of the rules, as there is a separate field for them in the profile. In addition, Google regularly scans the resources to which the link leads: if your website is infected with viruses or malicious software, your business profile will be suspended for user safety. Before submitting an appeal, you must check the site and make sure that it is safe for visitors.
5. Violation of address disclosure rules and company relocation, fake locations
Changing your address within the same city rarely raises questions, but moving to another location almost always results in automatic profile suspension. Google requires a real physical presence for businesses: the use of virtual offices or rented mailboxes without staff on site is a gross violation.
A business that lists a physical address in its profile must have a permanent sign with the business name. This is one of the main proofs of the business’s existence in reality.
If there are several businesses at one address, make sure that each of them has a separate profile, unique information, its own sign, and a set of documents (lease agreement, bills) that can be verified independently of each other.
If you do not have an office or other physical premises, or if you work from home, you should hide the address in your profile and only indicate the service area.
6. Incorrect service area settings
The service area is a parameter for businesses that operate on an outcall basis (cleaning, plumbing, electrical, tow trucks, etc.) and do not have an office (premises) for welcoming customers. It is important to remember that this parameter is more necessary for correct profile registration than for search promotion. Many people mistakenly believe that adding a large number of cities to this field will expand their coverage. In fact, the service area does not affect ranking or visibility in search results — Google almost always gives priority to companies that are physically located in a specific city. Attempting to expand your reach by adding dozens of unnecessary cities will not bring you customers, but may result in your account being suspended for data manipulation.
If you have a fixed location (salon, store), you do not need to fill in this field. For service-area businesses, it is important to specify an area within a 2-hour drive and be sure to hide your physical address to avoid having your profile suspended.
7. Incorrect change of activity type and business format
Changing the format of your business (for example, switching from a retail store to a delivery service or vice versa) requires strict adherence to Google’s instructions. Simply deleting the address or changing the category in the settings is not enough — such drastic changes are often interpreted by algorithms as an attempt to manipulate data, resulting in immediate suspension. Incorrectly setting the service area instead of the physical location (or vice versa) is one of the most common reasons for automatic profile suspension.
8. Inconsistency or falsification of working hours
Specifying round-the-clock operation (24/7) without the actual presence of staff on site is misleading to users and a direct violation of Google’s rules. The hours in the profile must clearly correspond to the periods when the customer can actually receive the service or find staff at the specified address. If the algorithm or a user complaint reveals that the establishment is closed during the stated working hours, this will be a valid reason for suspending the profile.
9. Creating multiple profiles (duplicates) for the same business
If you have intentionally or accidentally registered multiple profiles for the same business with identical or very similar data, be sure to delete the extra profiles before submitting an appeal. When submitting an appeal, it is important to openly admit your mistake — this will increase the chances of your profile being reinstated.
10. Excessive activity and frequent profile edits
Making numerous changes to a profile within a short period of time is often interpreted by Google’s algorithms as suspicious activity, an attempt to manipulate data, or a sign of a possible account hack. This can trigger an automatic profile block “until the circumstances are clarified.” It is recommended to make changes gradually and only when necessary.
11. Reputation of owners and administrators’ accounts.
Be careful when granting access to your profile to third-party specialists. If a user with administrator rights has a “bad history” on Google (for example, previously managed blocked profiles or made spam edits to other entries), this automatically puts your business at risk. Google analyzes the activities of each manager: questionable actions by an administrator in other projects can trigger your profile to be suspended as potentially dangerous.
12. Violations in related Google services.
Any sanctions or blocks on other company products (for example, in Google Ads or Merchant Center) negatively affect the overall level of trust in your business. Google considers your activity comprehensively: if your advertising account is blocked for policy violations or suspicious payments, this often triggers the suspension of your business profile in Maps. A stable reputation across all Google services is the key to the security of your presence in search results.
13. Business types for which profile creation is prohibited
There are certain types of businesses for which it is prohibited to create a business profile. These include: online businesses without a physical presence, rental of houses or apartments (unless it is an officially registered hotel/aparthotel with a reception area), as well as lead generation services, etc. Even if you manage to verify such a profile, algorithms or moderators will eventually delete it anyway. Only companies that directly serve customers at the specified address or visit them within the stated work schedule are eligible for a profile.
14. Fake content and misleading reviews
Data accuracy is a priority for Google, so strict measures are applied to any instances of content manipulation. All information in the profile must correspond to the actual state of affairs, and reviews must be based solely on genuine customer experience. Any attempt to manipulate ratings or create a non-existent image of the company will result in the profile being suspended.
Critical violations include:
- Using services to boost reviews.
- Publishing reviews from accounts that have never visited the location.
- A massive flood of reviews in a short period of time.
- Reviews from the owner, relatives, or employees (conflict of interest).
- Using stock photos from the internet or created with artificial intelligence instead of real photos of your office, facade, or products.
15. Technical glitches and errors in Google Maps algorithms
Suspension is not always the result of a deliberate or accidental violation of the rules by the business owner. Google is constantly updating its anti-spam algorithms and improving its artificial intelligence. During such large-scale updates, the system may mistakenly identify legitimate profiles as suspicious. Such automatic sanctions can be caused by technical glitches in data synchronization or overly sensitive AI filters that perceive a routine update of photos or work schedules as a bot attack.
16. Complaints from competitors or users
The “Suggest an edit” feature allows Google Maps users to report nonexistent companies or errors. If your profile receives a complaint that the company “does not exist at this address,” “is permanently closed,” or “the name does not match the real one,” moderators (or automatic algorithms) may suspend the profile. Complaints backed up by evidence are particularly dangerous: for example, a photo of an empty room or closed doors during business hours.
Remember that the best defense against such attacks is a perfectly filled-out profile with real photos that refute any manipulative complaints.
